Have you ever had an Agiorgitiko? Can you say Agiorgitiko? It’s not as hard as it looks, Ah-your-yee-tee-ko. There, you’ve got it! The grape is named after St. George, a Christian martyr born to Greek parents who became a Roman soldier.
Where would you find an Agiorgitiko? That would be in the Peloponnese region of Greece. Located at the southern aspect of the Greek peninsula, and connected to the central mainland by a narrow strait, the Peloponesse is home to seven PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) areas including Nemea, where Skouras produces this lovely wine.
Agiorgitiko is a generally full-bodied grape that produces wines that are dark in color with flavors of black and blue fruits, spices and herbal notes. Domaine Skouras is one of the premier producers of Agiorgitiko in this region, and one taste of this bottle will tell you why. This particular wine had notes of blueberry and plum with hints of earth, black pepper, and dried oregano. The tannins were silky smooth. This wine makes me want to slip on something soft and lounge about doing nothing for days. At about $14 per bottle, I could lounge for weeks. Cheers!
