Falvo’s in Flight

We visited the Great Salt Lake yesterday. It is a terminal lake, fed by three major rivers but with no outlet other than evaporation. Minerals are concentrated and left behind with the evaporation resulting in a high salinity and mineral content. It’s way saltier than the ocean making it really easy to float. I was tempted but did not try! The salt content makes it impossible for most species to survive, save for brine shrimp and algae, but water birds are abundant on the shores. There was a solitary flamingo known as “Pink Floyd” who escaped an aviary and wintered on the lake for 18 years. He would eat the shrimp and hang out with gulls and swans native to the region! .
