Texas has some fantastic wine these days, but if you asked me what my favorite was, I’d have to answer the Duchman Family Winery Vermentino. It’s consistently the one I gravitate towards whether I’m searching on a restaurant list in Austin or buying for a party on a sunny Texas day. The Duchman Family Winery is dedicated to producing quality wine from Texas grown Italian grape varietals. Vermentino is primarily planted on The Mediterranean island of Sardinia. It can also be found in several other regions of Italy, often with a different name. In Liguria, they call the grape Pigato, and in Piedmont, Favorita. The Duchmans have found that the Texas High Plains are also a hospitable place to grow quality Vermentino grapes. Their efforts result in what I think is the perfect Texas wine. The 2015 vintage has a rich nose of ripe pears, peaches and lemon peel. The stone fruit and citrus, along with a crispy acidity make it an obvious choice for a backyard party on a hot Texas day as it is refreshing and easy to pair. At $18 a bottle it won’t break the bank and you may just turn someone on to fine Texas wine.
