What a privilege to have met the first family of modern Texas winemaking! Ed and Susan Auler traveled to France in 1973 to find the perfect breed of French cattle to cross with their Angus herd in the Texas Hill Country. Instead, they came back to Texas with a vision that quality wine could be produced in none other than their home near Lake Buchanan, Texas. Fall Creek Vineyards now produces a wide variety of delicious Texas wines. Our last anniversary was spent at the Fall Creek property where we fell in love with the beautiful setting, the friendly staff and their stellar GSM from Salt Lick Vineyard just outside of Austin. Today, we met them in New York at the Texas Wines Are Coming to New York event at Rouge Tomate in Chelsea. Their standout wine for us today was the delicious Grenache Rosé, a juicy, refreshing and just damn good Texas Rosé. Drink local y’all, and if you aren’t from Texas, drink outside your box. Texas is making it happen with varietals that you might associate with southern France, Italy and Spain as well as some serious contenders that you might never expect to come out of the Lone Star State!
